Hello Peacock parents,

Information from us, week 13

In the last week of the ‘organs’ theme the peacocks where introduced to a new organ, the kidney. They where shown pictures and videos regarding the organ.
In addition it’s location, size and function was repeated throughout the week to enable the children in learning about organs.

HELP! We have two parents who are already joining us on our  museum trip on the 15th of April, but we need two more to join us. Please let us know if you would like to join us on that day.

We have noticed some children don’t have indoor shoes, this is very important for their safety. We would like to ask you to take a look at that. Thanks

Some of you have informed us verbally or on paper about your child’s schedule for ‘Easter and Valborg’. We would like to ask the rest of the parents also to inform us about their child’s whereabouts during the Easter en Valborg before the 4th of April.

The Peacocks have a new phone number 0767233869. Please make a note of this!

Our Learning

Science and art: In continuation with our “body organs” theme the children were introduced to another organ – Kidney. An activity regarding ‘body organs’ was done in which each child was given an outline of the human body and they had to paste all five organs, taught till now, at their correct location. They also made intestines using ‘play dough’ and ‘pipecleaners’. Please take a look in the science room where you can find their art work.

Amazing race: We went for the Amazing race on Tuesday. This race was truly ‘AMAZING’ in the sense the peacocks had to work with each other to complete a given set of tasks to win the race. The tasks where designed by teachers of our school, in such a manner that not only where they fun to do but the children also gained some knowledge while doing them. For example; they had to complete a puzzle, put it in an envelope and then post it to the school. In completing this task, the peacocks learned the steps involved in posting letters/postcards etc. In the end all the children agreed on one thing that this race was truly AMAZING!

Fire station: On Wednesday we went together with the flamingoes to the fire station. The children got to do three activities; looking at the fire truck, watch a movie about what fireman do in case of a fire and the children also tried to ‘put out’ the fire with the water hose. The children enjoyed it very much!

Maths Activity: Counting and adding using beads proved to be a hit with the children. The children were given strings and beads, and according to the number written on the paper to which the strings were stuck, they had to put the same number of beads in their corresponding thread. In the next step another number was added to the previous one and so they had to add more beads. In this way they managed to make a necklace and a bracelet.

Today we went to the park. We had circle time amidst the greenery with the sun shining upon us and there we did a math game. The children had to work in teams and solve small additions and subtractions.
After that the children were asked to narrate the story of  "Gruffalo" by looking at the pictures in the book.

Hello Peacock parents,

Information from us, week 12

For the preparation of our visit to the museum on the 15th of April, we are introducing all the different body parts to the children. This week it was the liver that got introduced.

We have two parents who are already joining us on this outing but we need two more to join us. Please let us know if you would like to join us on that day.

With the changing of weather we would like to ask you to bring in winter and rain clothes for the children. Also we have noticed some children don’t have enough spare clothes, we would like to ask you to also take a look at that. Thanks

Tuesday we will have the Amazing race. The preparations are almost done and three parents will help us with the activities.

The Peacocks have a new phone number 0767233869. Please make a note of this!

Our learning

Science: In continuation with our “body organs” theme the children were introduced to another organ – liver. Through pictures and video, the kids were made aware of it’s location, function, shape, color and size. This activity was repeated throughout the week to reinforce their knowledge of internal organs In addition recapitulation of previously taught organs was also done from time to time. It ended with an activity in which the children were given the pictures of the outline of the human body in which they had to paste the pictures of the body organs at their correct location

Math and social skills: Every Thursday Flamingoes and Peacocks join to do activities together. We planned various math activities for both the groups, so that they learn concepts, learn to cooperate and work in a team. In the first math activity the children had to do addition sums by threading the number of beads and counting them in the end to find out the answer. This activity helped the children count quantities and learn addition in a more. In the second math activity the children were introduced to number bonds of 10, 9,8,7,6,5 and 4. Each child was given a cup with a number written on it. They had to find out different ways of making the number on the cup. There were addition and subtraction problems written on strips. They had to calculate the answer and if it matched the number on their cup, they had to put the strip in their cup. It was challenging as well as fun for them. They also learned that there were more than one-way of making a number e.g. 6+4, 5+5 and 7+3 will make ten.

Traditions: We celebrated St Patrick’s Day on Monday. The children watched a short video on the significance of St Patrick day. We made leprechauns using different colored paper. The children had to cut the hat, strips for beard and then had to draw the face of a leprechaun.

Vocabulary and story telling: This week we read the story “Gruffalo” written by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. In this activity pictures of objects and characters, which the children were given to hold, had to be placed on the mat according to their occurrence in the story. The activity was enjoyable for the children, as they had to listen carefully to place their picture on the mat. This activity not only strengthened their sequencing skills but also helped in widening their imagination. The children were also introduced to letter “e”. We encourage children to sound, blend and then read the words. We continued singing nursery rhymes and “the sailor went to sea sea sea” is becoming quite popular among the children.

Newsletter Peacocks week 11

Hello Peacock parents,

Information from us, week 11

As you all know, today is Corries’ last full-time day with the Peacocks before he will go on parent leave. We wish him lots of fun with his daughter and are happy to have him coming in on Tuesdays.

This week we celebrated Pakistan’s week, miss Asma is from Pakistan and organized some amazing activities for the children.

The children learned nursery rhymes in Urdu, baked Pakistani food, danced to Bhangra songs and much more. The children were shown many pictures related to Pakistan. We talked about the pictures together and then each child got to place the picture under its correct heading card. It was fun for the children as they could talk about the pictures and match them to its heading cards e.g. location, culture/traditions, sports, exports and currency.

The Peacocks have a new phone number 0767233869. Please make a note of this!

Our learning

Science: In science the children explored how the primary colors combine to create new vibrant colors. They also learned a new art and craft technique to dye textile i.e. by placing lentils in the middle of the cloth, tying it with a thread and then by dipping the cloth in one color at a time. The children loved the activity as they could choose their own colors, dip and see the color change. The results were remarkable and they surely created masterpieces.

Art and baking: The children decorated the Pakistani flag with crepe paper and glitter.
For Pakistani food we made Pakistani bread called paratha and Pakistani tea. The children kneaded their own parathas using wheat flour. We had them for snack and the kids loved it.

Traditions and math: Basant is one of the important festivals in Pakistan and it is celebrated at the arrival of spring. On this day the sky is filled with many colorful kites of different shapes and sizes. For art and math’s activity children made kites by cutting different shapes and gluing them together. The have learned the names for different quadrilaterals i.e square, rhombus, kite, parallelogram, rectangle. We dressed up in Pakistani clothes and danced on the bhangra songs. Children also learned Pakistani Bhangra dance moves and got a henna tattoo with glitter.

Language and Vocabulary: In the Treasure bag activity children were shown objects or things that belonged to Pakistan. Children could feel the objects and it was a fun experience for them. They learned many new words and as a memory test at the end of the activity, they had to match word cards to the objects.

Math day: Today we had Math day. Corrie made a addition/subtracting table.  The table is split into colors and labeled by their place value (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands) The children found it much easier to add or subtract when they could color code the numbers!  This was a great success!  There are pictures attached.
