Information from us

Some of you may already know, Corrie is going on parental leave.  His final regular day will be the 14th of march.  He will be in once a week on tuesdays until the parent leave is over.

As a reminder, we will still be outside for 2 hours everyday. Every child should have snow pants and a coat or a snow suit, waterproof shoes, gloves, a warm hat, and extra socks. The weather is a bit nasty at the moment and the children get very dirty when they play outside.  Please try to take home outside clothes to be washed.  Lastly, every child should also have inside shoes and a sweater or fleece to wear indoors.

We have also found 8 cases of lice in the Flamingoes group 🙁

Please check your child´s head!

When we tell you ,parents, to check your kid´s heads, it is very important to do it right. It is not possible to see the lice just by looking…To be able to really see if your child has lice, you need to use a lice comb. You need to wet your child´s hair, put some balsam and then you need to comb your child´s hair several times, in all directions. If you find lices, you need to do the treatment. The follow-up is very very important! To comb the child´s hair everyday for two weeks and repeat the treatment after 7 days is as important.

Please check this video for intructions:

Our learning

Social skill: this week we continued mixing the Flamingos and Peacocks groups for about an hour on Thursdays. The purpose of the mixing of the groups is to better prepare the children who will be going to school next season and for the children to be able to socialize with children they may not have much contact with over the course of a normal day. Some of the children are former classmates so they are getting to spend some time with old friends again. We think it is very important that the children have some time to socialize with children other that the ones in their groups.

Art: This week we are continuing with makeing our toilet paper roll houses. For a lack of supplies we hadnt been able to finish the project but now we have what we need! There will be more news of this activity to come.

Language
and Vocabulary: One of the purposes of combining the Flamingos and Peacocks groups is to develop the childrens language and vocabulary skill. Some children need special attention in either English or Swedish and we intend to provide that attention. The children did some activities that focused on pronounciation and grammar. We believe this will not only help develop the childrens language skill but also their confidence to speak different languages oher than their own.

Math:
The other purpose of mixing groups is to develop the childrens math skill. The children were devided into 4 groups and had some time to do a number of activities. Every activity was a short one so as not to lose the childrens focus. This week, mixing the groups was deffinately a success! The children did some math using the color pencil activity, they constructed their own game with the hoop activity, and they built different shapes using triangle cutouts amongst a couple of other activities.

Science: This week the children learned about the different states of matter and molecules.  On monday, the children were devided into 3 groups and did 3 different activites concerning liquids, solids, and gas.  We have attached pictures!

Outing: As you all know, we were planning to have our Vasa Loppet this friday but we had no snow until thursday!  Instead the Peacocks went to the big hill in the park behind the school and built snowmen.  We brought along some snacks and juice for the children as well so it may slightly resemble Vasa Loppet.  We are instead planning an ”Amazing Race”.  Hopefully this will take place next month.  We will send more details soon.

Important Dates:

Friday 28th of February- The Peacocks will talk with Hanna Duster over skype at 10:30.

24th-28th of February- Sport lov (the school will be open for regular care)

Thursday 6th of March- Parents meeting

If you should have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to email, call, or speak directly with us.

Letter from the PSA

Dear Parents,

As you may have heard we have had another lice attack at the pre-school. At the moment only one group is affected but unless effective measures are taken to treat the infestation it will quickly spread (like it did before). You may recall that last term the school had several cases of head lice and the matter was eventually brought under control and eliminated. Following that episode, new measures were discussed and put into place through a revised Health and Sick Policy, which was circulated to all parents and also discussed and agreed at the parents’ meeting in September of last year.

At the present moment the pre-school policy is to collect your child as soon as possible on notification, do the required treatment and keep your child out of the pre-school for 48 hours. The 2 weeks follow up procedures are also as important.

We now understand that some parents have raised concerns with the policy and we are willing to listen and come to a mutual agreement to eradicate lice problem.

Important to keep in mind that the policy was created to protect all children and staff at the pre-school and to avoid a total infestation.

It is paramount that when your child has lice that he/she is removed from the school quickly. Children cannot be kept in isolation as it is unfair to the child and it is not something the pre-school wishes to do.

However, as parents who have been affected in the past, we know that it takes some time to eradicate the lice from the hair and the home. It is also unfair to other children and their parents as well as the staff to not pick up your child promptly after lice notification or/and send them back to pre-school without being 100% sure that both lice and eggs are gone (within 48 hours).

We (the PSA) welcome comments and feedback before 24 February and will discuss them at the next PSA meeting.

This is the current policy for dealing with head lice:

"Head lice

The child has to be at home for 48 hours and can only return to the pre-school when completely free from lice and nits (lice eggs). Parents will sign a Form where they take responsibility for the treatment and the follow-up during 3 weeks."

The PSA would be grateful if you could let us know if you are happy with this policy or would like to change it. Please mark below which of the statements you agree with and send it back to your PSA representative.

Flamingoes parents shall send their answers to Adriana because Sara Ekenryd in on vacation.

I would like to keep the current policy for dealing with head lice. [  ]

I would like to change the current policy for dealing with head lice. [  ]

In this case, how?…………………………………………………………

Many thanks for your help.

Lice

Dear parents,

We have found 8 cases of lice in the Flamingoes group 🙁

Please check your child´s head!

When we tell you ,parents, to check your kid´s heads, it is very important to do it right. It is not possible to see the lices just by looking…To be able to really see if your child has lice, you need to use a lice comb.

Some parents have given us suggestios about the products that are good to use:

1.     There is a product called PARANIX ( to be used over night) that seems to be really good.

2.     There is a comb called Nitfree which is sold at Life, hälsokraft and halsä för alla. ( This comb is good to take away lice and also Lice eggs.)

The nits (lice eggs) need to be combed away because the treatment has no effect on the eggs. If they are not taken off the hair, the lices will come back.

The follow up is very important!

-Parents need to comb the child´s hair everyday during 2 weeks with the lice comb.

-After 7 days, the treatment shall be repeated.

-Clothes, bed clothing, hats, stuffed animals, carpets need to be washed

We are taking this situation very seriously and to avoid infestation, we have decided to take some drastic measures.

1.     Children with lices will be sent home for 48 hours

2.     Parents will sign a Notification Form

3.     Children can only come back to the pre-school when they are completly free of lices and lice eggs.

This week-end 22/02 and 23/2 we will have a lice treatment week-end!

I would like to ask all parents to do the Lice treatment in your kids(maybe your family?) during this week-end!

Please take your kid´s clothes from the pre-school(all of them) and wash them over the week-end.

Don´t forget to wash the bed clothing, hats, stuffed animals, etc

Here you can find information Regarding Head lice:  http://kidshealth.org/

I hope you all understand and cooperate with us.

We want to protect all the children, parents and staff in order to avoid infestation

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Information from us

Dear parents!

As you all can see, the spring seems to be coming earlier this year.

The snow is gone and as it always happens during the spring season, the ground is getting softer and really wet and muddy.

Last autumn we did a reform in our playground outside and we sowed grass.

We took away the protection we had around it because we thought it was going to be a white february, with snow.

It´s going to be difficult for the grass to grow so we may change our plans.

I have already contacted a company and they will be here on monday to see what we can do with the muddy part of the playground.

I understand that some of you, parents, do not like that the kids get so muddy outside…But, at the same time, I would like to tell you all that the children absolutely love it! Whenever there is a pool of water (vattenpöl), that´s where the kids want to be.

I will get back to you soon with more information

Best Regards

Adriana Marx Norén

Our learning

Social skill: Over the course of the school year, the children have found their ”circle of friends” and the tend to always stay near that circle. We found it important to encourage the children to socialize with other children as well. On monday we decided to make different groups of children to encourage that socialization. Every group had 3 to 4 children and those children did activities together that day instead of every child only wanteing to be with their close friends.

This went well enough to continue on tuesday.

Art: As some of you may know, one of the peacocks biggest personalities is leaving the school. On thursday, we took the time as a class to make a big goodbye card for her. Every child had a small card to design and put into the big card. The children all put a personal goodbye on their card. The children also made valentines day cards. They chose the materials they wanted to put into their cards and personalized the greeting as well.

Language and Vocabulary:
This week we are revisiting certain sounds that are used in everyday speech for both english and swedish. A few times over the course of the week, we sat in groups briefly and practices saying different sounds and words containing those sounds. We also practices the combination of certain words containing the sounds we were focusing on. We will continue to do more of this every week.

We are also focusing on learning the alphabet. The children did an activity where the made letter on the floor with rice. The letters were drawn onto the floor with crayon and the children filled in the space of the letters with rice. The children really enjoyed this activity! Everyone wanted to participate! The children also did more of the story cube activity. Soon we will put the story up for display.

Math:
This week we have begun a new routine with the children and their math training. There are a number of children in the peacocks and flamingos groups who will be going to school next fall and we want to prepare them as best we can. The peacock and flamingo children who will be going to school will combine once a week to work with math. There will be 3 to 4 different math activities for the children to participate in. The groups will rotate so every child has an opportunity to do every activity.

Holistic View: We have had quite a few birthdays this month in the peacocks group. For the latest birthdays, we set up a monthly calendar surrounding the sun. The birthday children had a chance to find the month they were born in and to walk around the sun passing all of the months singing ”the earth goes around the sun” on the way back to their birthday month. We are attmpting to develop the childrens understanding of what a year is and how many years old they are. Now that we have the materials, this is somthing we will continue for every childs birthday.

Lastly, we would like to wish Hanna Duster well as her family goes back to Germany. The Peacocks group and FuturaSkolan will miss you!

Important Dates:

Thursday 20th of February- Lilla Vasaloppet

24th-28th of February- Sport lov (the school will be open for regular care)

Thursday 6th of March- Parents meeting

Information from us

Hello Peacock parents!

We plan to do some activities next week that we need some materials for.  We are in need of plastic bottles such as empty shampoo bottles or even water bottles.  We also need toilet paper rolls.  If any of these materials can be spared, please send them to school with your child.

Our learning

Science: The children have been learning about the water cycle. We used a 3D model of the water cycle to discuss different stages of the water cycle. We discussed the what if scenario e.g what if there was no rain or what if the sun never came out? Children also learned new terms e.g. water vapor , evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Later we carried out the rain experiment and the children were amazed to see the water turn blue when it started to rain!!!

In arts and craft activity each child made their own 3D water cycle model. Each child got to cut the sun , cut strips of paper for rain drops and water vapor. Then they made clouds and colored the river  and together we assembled the water cycle. One side of the water cycle represents evaporation and the other side represents precipitation. The children loved the activity and could not wait to hang their amazing creations in the science room.

Next we made clouds inside a bottle using hot water, ice, lid and hair spray. This experiment was a big hit and we had to repeat it several times.

Art: Following our theme of the week which was India, The children colored indian flags. The children also made indian flags from colored rice that was glued to paper. Savita also showed the children some Indian dance. The children had a great time learning the dance moves and dancing together.

English and Vocabulary: We are continuing our learning of one letter per week. This week we are focusing on the letter D. Every child had the opportunity write the upper and lower-case on paper and to color in both versions of the letter. Along with this, during circle time we asked the children to think of words or names that begin with the letter D. The children also did some baking having to do with learning the letters! We put toger some inedible dough for the children to shape letters out of and then we baked the dough to make the letters hard.

Math: The children continued with the number pencils activity. In this game the children use any amount of colored pencils and a piece of paper. The children first write numbers 1-10 for example. Then they lay a colored pencil down under the number that color wrote. If the children are doing addition, all of the pencils are cleard from the paper and with every math problem, the more pencils are added to the paper just beneath the numbers. Should the children be doing subtraction, all of the pencils are put onto the paper under the colorsand as the game goes on, more pencils will be taken off of the paper.

We are attempting to show the children how to do math in a way where they actually see the processes and learn to understand them.

The World: This week, we learned India. As you may know, Savita is from India and she had alot of great things to share with the children over the course of the week.  We began on Monday with presenting India.  The children learned about the Indian currency, traditions, and the location of India.  We continued the next day with observing some things that Savita brought from India.  Savita also did henna tattoos on the children’s hands which they enjoyed very much!  The children learned about Taj Mahal, listed to some songs sung by one of the peacock children who is from India, baked some Indian snacks called Matri and ended the week with dressing up in Indian clothes and dancing together to Indian music!  The peacocks had a great week with India!

Dear parents,

This week we will talk about India. Savi has prepared a lot of activities for the children.

We would like to inform you that she will make a small henna tattoo on the palm of the hand of the children. If you do not agree please let us know. We can replace the henna for face paint.

Also the children will be wearing saree/Indian traditional clothes that Savi will bring to school.

In the next few weeks we will have different art projects. We would like to make pencil holders from plastic shampoo/shower gel bottles, and bird feeders out of cans (from beans and tomato’s).

We would like to ask you to send bottles and cans to school with your kids.

Thank you for your help!
