Peacocks Newsletter 2013

Dear Peacock parents,

Information from us

We hope all of your children have had a fun and challenging time this year!  We tried our best to help all of the children as a group and individually according to their needs.  We are well on our way to accomplishing the goals we have set for language and math as well as social and motor skill.  Along the way the children have also learned facts about the world and it’s different countries and cultures.  Every day we search for the best way to reach every single child and the response is overwhelming!  We will continue to do everything we can to better prepare the children for the world outside!

Our learning

Circle time:  This year, we made great use of our circle time.  In the past, circle time was reserved for the group classroom.  Recently we have begun to have circle time in different places be it a classroom or not.  Talking with the children during circle time, we were able to see the things they had remembered and learned.  Also the children learned a bit about how to handle themselves in a group setting.  We believe this is a very important part of the day for the children and we are still working to make our circle times even better!

English and Vocabulary: The skill of communication is a very important one in life.  It is amazing to see the children develop their language skill and their non-verbal communication.  To see a child begin at Futura speaking one language and then learn another in just a few months is incredible.  We realize the children pick up habits and speech patterns from the people around them so we encourage the children to communicate in English but still give them the freedom to speak their chosen language.  We play a lot of games where the children learn the letters and the sounds they make.  We have been working on pronunciation of certain sounds that may be foreign to the children as well.

Math:  Math skill has been something that we are very focused g math games challenging.  There are quite a few children who find the challenge of math to be very fun!  All of the children have made great progress with learning numbers, learning about quantity, addition, and subtraction.  some children are also building multiplication and division skill.  The children’s intrest makes it so much easier to find different ways to help them learn!

Science: The children have been learning science in so many different ways.  We have tried to make science more of a daily activity than one that is done on a certain day.  Our aim was to make every project fun for the children and we believe we achieved that.  The children learned about planets, gravity, buoyancy, animals, liquid vs solid, nature ect.  Looking back, science was a big part or our weekly activities.

Social skill: The children are now learning to socialize with more and more of their classmates.  They are constantly finding new relationships for numerous reasons.  Even though language is a primary means of communication, the children are learning to communicate in different ways.  Children are beginning to make better eye contact when they communicate, They are also becoming comfortable enough to try different means of communication if there is a language gap.

It is very important to us that the children all learn to be understanding and kind to each other.  We always remind the children to practice good social habits and that communication is key in interaction with classmates.

We have attached pictures of some of our activities.

Peacocks Newsletter 12-16

Dear Peacock parents,

Information from us

Thank you all for attending our Lucia train and fika. It was very nice to see the children so excited to sing for their parents!

Our learning

Circle time: This week in circle time we have begun to review most of the things we have learned so far.
After having the morning fruit snack, we ask the children question about the things we have leaned to try to keep that information fresh in their minds. The children have done an excellent job listening and learning and it shows when we sit and review! All of the children are given ”peacock dollars” for participating and we also have a ”bonus question” that earns the children 5 peacock dollars. This helps to genenrate or maintain the childrens excitement for learning. Some of the things the children have learned are,

what the equator is

where it is located

where sweden is in proximity to the equator

what the ozone layer is

what the function of the ozone layer is

why there are holes in the ozone layer

some of the differences between living and non living objects

some countries and their flags and capitals

Nobel day: This week we celebrated our nobel day.

Art: The children made snowmen out of foam balls, toothpicks and, pipe cleaners. The children had a fun time with this activitry

English and Vocabulary: This week, the children started with new ipad game. The game is called Abc Ninja. The purpose of the game is to identify letters that appear on the screen and ”chop” them. For example, the narrator of the game may say the letter C but along with the letter C, four other letters appear on the screen so the children learn to distinguish one letter from the others.

Baking: For Lucia this week, the children baked Lussebulle. We also baked some christmas cookies which the children got to decorate.

Math: More children are becoming interested in math. More children actually learning how to multiply. We are tryin not to move too fast and make sure that all of the children know their numbers before they get into math and learn adding and subtracting before moving to multipication. The children seem to enjoy this challenge very much!

Science: For Science this week, the children learned how to build a simple electrical circut. We did this in small groups and the children understood and enjoyed the activity.

Important Dates: This friday the 20th of December is the last day of regular care before the Christmas break.

Newsletter final

Dear Peacocks parents,

Information from us

Thank you all for your cooperation with the development meetings. The process went very easily and we enjoyed speaking with all of you about your children. We will give our best effort to continue to aid in your childs development! During this time where all of the children are bringing more clothing to the school, we are doing our best to ensure that none of that clothing gets lost. Please be sure to write your childs name on their clothing so there are no mix ups. Also, some of the lockers are filling up very quickly with muddy clothing and shoes.  It is not raining at the moment so please take the rain clothes home.  At this time the children should have at the most 2 pairs of shoes meaning 1 pair of inside shoes and a pair of shoes for outside.

Our learning

Circle time: This week in circle time we have begun to learn the songs we will sing for the Lucia train.  We will continue to practice the songs.  We have also been talking about the planets again in more detail.  The children are starting to learn more about the planets we started on in august.

Art: This week we started to put together our Christmas tree.  We used cardboard box cut out as a tree and orange cartons with velcro to stick them to the tree.

English and Vocabulary:  The children did the story cube activity this week as well as a new activity where the children used six pictures to create a story in sequence.  The point of the activity was to help the children to learn how a story is built.

Baking: In observation of Sinterklaas, we baked pepernoten cookies.  Florentine is our Dutch specialist!  The children mixed and measured all of the ingredients on the scale and rolled the dough in their hands to prepare the cookies to be baked.  After the cookies were finished we ate them for snack.

Math: This week we did a lot of activities related to math.  We built towers using raw spaghetti and marshmallows.  In this activity the children prepared "blueprints" and tried to makes the most stable tower they could as a group.  Afterwards, the children ate marshmallows.

Our learning

Circle time: This week in circle time we have begun to learn the songs we will sing for the Lucia train.  We will continue to practice the songs.

Art: This week was the week of Thanksgiving.  For the past 2 weeks the children have been doing activities in preparation for Thanksgiving day.  This week the children did a lot of coloring of Pilgrims and Native Americans.  We attempted to help them to identify what Pilgrims looked like as well as what Native Americans looked like.  We also used the toilet paper rolls that you provided to make Pilgrim and Native American figurines!  Pictures are attached below.

Social: For Thanksgiving, we decided to move all the of our lunchtables together to resemble a Thanksgiving feast. Instead of the children being in their lunchtime groups, we all sat together and had lunch. Afterwards, we talked a little about what Thanksgiving is about and the children talked about the things they were thankful for.

Math: This week we continued with our peacocks dollars as well was using the iPad to supplement the children’s math development.  This week we have begun to explain to some of the children another way of doing multiplication using a grid.  Other children practiced reading and making math problems using a puzzle.

Gymtime: In our gym time this week we played some musical pillows as well as "whispering neighbor".  In whispering neighbor, the children stood around the walls of the gym and one child was givin a message.  That was to be passed around the class by whispering and finally said aloud by the last child to receive the message to see if the message was still the same.  The children had a lot of fun with this game!  We also played "freeze".  In this game the children got to play or dance or whatever they wanted to do while music was playing.  But, when the music stopped the children had to freeze.  Video is attached below.
