On the 13th of December we will celebrate Lucia.  On this day we will have our Lucia train in front of the preschool and the children will sing some Lucia songs.  Afterwards, There will be 2 coffee rooms for the parents to visit.

Our learning

Circle time: This week, we spoke alot about Thanksgiving and how it started in our circle time.  The children are really understanding the overall meaning of thanksgiving.  The know some of the characters and places in the story of the beginning of Thanksgiving.  next week we will get more into deatail as it is Thanksgiving week.

Art: Alot of the children have started to want to draw.  When we separate into our learning groups, we are sure to have one group that can sit with paper and pencil for drawing at some point inside of three activities.  The children enjoy this very much.  We encourage this because the children have some time to develop their fine motorskill and hand-eye coordination and they can be social with the other children and not disturb the current activity.  Also, the children are learning to express themselvs through art.

Language Development:  This week the children took part in the vegetable card activity.  In this activity we dicussed the vegetables on a set of flash cards, then matched the pictures to the name lables.  The purpose of this activity was to develop their use of spoken language, help them develop an intrest in pictures and to increase their vocabulary amongst other things.

Math: The children are continuing to develop math skills in alot of different ways.  One activity the children did this week was the constructive triangles activity.  In this activity the children used small triangles to form 4,6, and 12 point stars.  This activity helps the children developp reasoning and logic.  Also the children have the opportunity to experiment with geometry.

Clothing: Please send your children to school prepared for winter weather. In addition to rain clothes, please send something heavier for the children to wear underneath. Also, since there are some puddles left on the ground, please send your child to school with waterproof shoes or rain boots and extra socks.  Also, evey child should have a change of clothes.  Accidents happen and we would like for the children to be prepared.

Outings:
This week we took a trip to the library at taby centrum to see some performing arts.  In this case it was theatre.  We started our trip at about 9:30 in the morning with walking to the bus stop and taking the bus to taby centrum.  The children walked very well and showed great awareness being out in the community.  When we arrived at Taby centrum, we walked through the mall area to the library.  After arivingat the library, the children took off their rain clothes and waited quietly outside the theatre.  finally, we were able to go inside the theatre and be seated.  The children sat down in front of the single actor in the performance and watched the show.

At some points in the show the children could almost communicate with the actor so they all felt involved.  When the play was finished, the children got dressed and took the bus back to school for lunch.

Dear Parents!

Dear Peacocks parents!

I am writing this letter to all of you to talk about the changes in Peacocks. Sorry that it took a while to send this information, but I wanted to make sure every peace was in it´s place before announcing the changes.

Mimmi Solberg, has been working at the Kiwis group because Paulina Eimre had to leave earlier due to her pregnancy. We needed someone to take over the group and Mimmi volunteered.

Thank you for your help. Mimmi!

Monique Johansson, who has been in sick-leave since the beginning of october, has now decided to move on to new challenges and she will not come back to the pre-school.

We wish her good luck in her future projects.

ASMA BILAL has been working instead of Monique since the beginning of october and she is doing a really great job. She is a Montessori teacher and her skills and knowledge is a great asset to the group. The children are very comfortable with her.

CORRIE SUTHERLIN, majored in english in college, basketball player and coach, is the Peacocks team leader together with FLORENTINE JENSTER .

Corrie is also our mathematics mentor and is doing a great math work with the children in groups as well as individually. The children love him!

Florentine is a junior school teacher with her university degree from Holland. All children know her because she has been working at the pre-school for almost 2 years. She is working 45% ( Wednesdays and fridays) because she is also working as a teacher in the Dutch school.

SAVITA CHAUDRY is working 55% (Mondays, tuesdays and thursdays ). She has the bachelor degree in sciences and zoologi and masters in english. Savita has been working at the pre-school since august and all children know her very well.

The Peacocks´teachers are :

Corrie, Florentine, Asma and Savita

The teachers have been working together since the beginning of october and the Peacocks children are settled down as an unified group.

I am really happy with the Peacock´s group. They are working beautifully together.

They had a great time with the Olympics, The health day, The chemistry day, the Halloween party and they had a great time  at the theater yesterday.

Right now it´s all about Thanks giving and afterwards it will be time for Nobel day and Lucia.

If parents would like to come and spend the day with the group, you are very welcome! That is the best and only way to experience the group, the teachers and the children together. You would be impressed.

Just tell the teachers in advance so we don´t have several parents at the same time.

I hope I have been answering most of your questions.

If you have any doubts, please let me know!

Have a great week-end

Best Regards

Peacocks Newsletter 11-15

Dear Peacocks parents,

Information from us

Please remember that we will have our development talks on the 18th, 20th, 22nd of this month.  We have already emailed a schedule for all of you to choose an available time for your development talk.  This worked very well and we would like to thank you for your cooperation.  There are still a few who have not scheduled a time.  Please contact us to make arrangements.  We will be going to the theatre on the 21st of this month.  If you would like to come along with us, please let us know.  Any parent that would like to come is welcome.

Our learning

Circle time: This week, the number of children present has returned to the full amount.  We have begun to use our own "Peacock’s Dollars" system this week.  We discus the children’s total peacock dollar amount and also what they might have spent dollars on.  We also have begun to talk about Thanksgiving and it’s history.

Art: In preparation for Thanksgiving, we have begun some Thanksgiving art.  So far, we have created our class turkey.  We did this by making a big turkey that had no feathers.  Next, the children were separated into groups and the all took turns having their fingers painted different colors and placed onto the construction paper to make feathers for our turkey.  Also, the children have colored and traced turkeys individually.  Some of which we will display at our bulletin board.

Language Development:  The children have continued with their "story cube" activity.  The children are separated into groups and they roll the cubes and come up with a part of a whole story on their own dependent upon the picture that was rolled onto the cube.  This stimulated the children’s imagination and creativity as well as their use of practical language.  You can find the stories that the children have come up with next to our bulletin board.

Math: We are continuing to use the iPad to train the children’s math abilities but we realize that not every child is willing to use the iPad in this way.  We have come up with the "peacocks dollars" money system that the children use everyday in our group.  They earn dollars by simply saying "please" and "thank you". They also earn dollars by playing nicely.  This week most of the children used one of their dollars to buy autumn stickers that Florentine brought for the children.  Some chose to save their dollars instead.
As the system continues we will find more opportunities for the children to earn and spend dollars.  First and foremost this system is about math.  The children earn dollars and spend dollars.  We even encourage them to loan dollars to their friends.  This way we hope to create excitement and fun surrounding the subject of mathematics.  Also, it serves as a means to be social.  The children do talk about their dollars with the other children.  The system also reinforces trying to create polite habits.
The children are also beginning with learning odd and even numbers!

Clothing: As of today, the weather has gotten even colder! Please send your children to school prepared for winter weather. In addition to rain clothes, please send something heavier for the children to wear underneath. Also, since there are some puddles left on the ground, please send your child to school with waterproof shoes or rain boots and extra socks.

Gym time: In our gym time this week we played a game called "hand back".  In this game the children must stand in a line and pass a ball backwards over their head to the next child then run to the back of the line.  The ball eventually comes to them again and they must pass it over their head again.  The point of he game is to move the ball across the room and put it into the basket.  This game promotes cooperation and teamwork.

Peacocks Newsletter 11-8

Dear Peacocks parents,

Information from us

Please remember that This upcoming Monday the 11th of November, the school will be closed for regular care.  Also, we will have our development talks on the 18th, 20th, 22nd of this month.  We have sent everyone the link to schedule a time.  For those who have already scheduled a time, thank you! For those who have not, there are still times available act quickly to find a time that best suits your needs.

We will be going to the theatre on the 21st of this month.  If you would like to come along with us, please let us know.  Any parent that would like to come is welcome.

We will be doing an art activity for thanksgiving where the need to all have a toilet paper roll.  If possible, please send one toilet paper roll to school with your child next week.

If you have not already retuned the Christmas schedule form for your child’s schedule over the holidays, please do so as soon as possible.

Our learning

Art: Over the course of the next couple of weeks, the children will build their own bird houses.  This week the children took some time to design their bird houses in detail.  The children came up with some great ideas for their bird houses!

Language Development:  This week children continued to play the action game.  One child picked cards with a verb printed on them and acted those verbs out while the other children tried to guess what action was being performed.  This game increases vocabulary and introduces verbs as action words.  We also did some pronunciation along with a game where the children identify a picture of and say 1 of 100 English words on the iPad.

Math: this week we continued to work with the children individually at their own particular pace.  More children are becoming interested in math.  Next week we will begin to have "peacock dollars".  We have the idea that this will be a great tool for some of the children who may not be so eager to learn math in a conventional way.

Science:  This week the children did a "sink or float" activity.  The children put different objects into a bowl full if water to see which ones would float or if they would sink.  Along with this we tried to predict whether or not an object would sink or float, discussed why some objects sank or floated and separated the object accordingly.

Clothing: Please send your children to school prepared for winter weather. In addition to rain clothes, please send something heavier for the children to wear underneath. Also, please send your child to school with a beanie, waterproof shoes or rain boots and extra socks.

Gym time: This week our gym time was fairly short.  The children were very eager to go outside to the park so we played "duck, duck, goose" then left to the park where the children had plenty of time and space to play freely.  We will be changing the setup of our gym area soon!  We will keep you up to date. We would also like to ask that EVERY child have indoor shoes to help prevent any accidents while we have activities in the gym.

11-01 Peacocks Newsletter

Dear Peacocks parents,

Information from us

We would like to thank all of the parents who attended our Halloween fika. We always enjoy having to mingle with you! Please remember that we will have our development talks on the 18th, 20th, 22nd of this month.  We will provide an opportunity for you to schedule a time in the next week.  Also, we will be going to the theatre on the 21st of this month.  If you would like to come along with us, please let us know.  Any parent that would like to come is welcome.

Our learning

Circle time: This week, the number of children present was low due to the Fall break.  We would have liked to continue with our talks about another country but we didn’t want many children to miss what we were doing.  In our circle time this week we sang counting songs, played games such as "monkey see, monkey do" where all of the children imitated on persons actions or "guess who" where the children attempted to guess a word or a thing that another child was acting out.

Baking: This week, in preparation for our Halloween fika, the children made an Americam Favorite.  S’mores dip!  The children sat together and broke up all of he chocolate with their hands.  Then they added the marshmallows and a bit of milk.  We put the ingredients into a pot and melted them together.  When that was finished we added more marshmallows to the top and baked it together until the marshmallow on top was brown.  If you tasted this at the fika you know the fished product came out perfect!

Art: In preparation for Halloween, the children have been coloring different Halloween pictures such as witches, jack-o-lanterns, cats, ect. We also hung our creepy spiders from the ceiling of the math/construction room.

Language Development:  The children worked with the "Word picture box".  In this activity the children matched pictures with words.  With this, they learn correct words for things.  For example, seeing a picture of a foot and matching it with the word foot.  The children would learn the correct name of that object instead of maybe calling it a leg.

Math: Over the past couple of months we have carefully observed the children’s math skill individually.  We are now working more closely with the children individually.  This way we can pay attention to the needs of every child and help them to learn at their own individual speed.  The abilities in our Peacocks group range from starting to identify and write numbers and symbols to basic division and multiplication using a multiplication table.

Gym time: The children have really enjoyed the "musical pillows" game we play in the gym so we continued to play it.  We also started to play "hot potato". This game is similar to musical pillows.  The children sat in a circle and passed the "potato" around until the music stopped.  Whomever is holding the potato when the music stops sits out to cheer the other children on until the game is over.  We played with 2 potatoes so the cheering children didn’t have to sit and wait so long.  Along with this gym activity, we were sure to talk to the children about the spirit of competition.  We explained that competition is not so much about winning or losing, but more about how you play the game.  We will continue to put emphasis on that.
