“They shout if there are adults speaking at the dinner table, they interrupt you all the time and they demand the same space as adults.”

Our learning

The children will begin to compose a story every week using our ”Story Cubes”. There are 9 dice that have pictures on each side that the children will roll to come up with a part of our weekly story. This is a great way for the children to use their imagination and creativity. The story book will be posted on our bulliten board every friday for one week if you would like to read it.

Circle time: This week we continued our world theme with talking about Germany. We discussed the flag and coat of arms of Germany, if Germany has a king or a presiden, what the president’s name is, the capital of Germany, The Berlin wall etc. We also continued dicussing which animal family certain animals belong to.

Outings: As you all know, our front yard is being re-done so our outings have been trips to the park this week. We are planning a trip to the Library in Täby Centrum. We will keep you up to date on the progress of this plan.

Science: We have been talking about different animals and which family they belong to for almost 2 weeks. By families we mean, Reptile, Mammal, Insect, Amphibian, or Bird. The children have been learning characteristics of each family and where some animals fit in.

Art: In preparation for Halloween, the children have been coloring different Halloween pictures such as witches, jack-o-lanterns, cats, ect. The children have also begun making big spiders out of foam balls and wire pipe cleaners. The children all helped carve our class pumpkin!! Some children will not be present next week so we took this opportunity while most of them were here. The children were devided into 3 groups. One group cleaned the inside of the pumpkin, another group separated the seeds from the pulp and another group helped draw the lines we would later cut to make the face on the pumpkin. Later, the children all took turns with the carving knife (which is designed to carve the pumpkin but not to cut skin). Together we completed our Jack-o-Lantern! Pictures are attached.

Math: We have continued to use the ipad to do math games but we are placing more focus now on writing the numbers now that the children have begun to better understand the concept of mathmatics. We have also begun to challenge the children who are showing a great intrest in math by spending a few extra minutes with them together as a group and working on multiplication and different ways to solve problems.

Clothing: Please send your children to school prepared for winter weather. In addition to rain clothes, please send something heavier for the children to wear underneath. Also, since there are some puddles left on the ground, please send your child to school with waterproof shoes or rain boots and extra socks.

Gym time: This week in the gym we played a new game we call musical pillows. We put pillows around the circle and play music while the children walk around the pillows and outside the circle. When the music stops, the children must move quickly to find a pillow to sit on. The children who dont find a pillow to sit on go out and cheer on the remaining children as we remove one pillow and continue the game. The children have a great time playing this game!!

Motor Skill: This week the children were introduced to the Color Wheel Activity. The children discovered that primary colors could be mixed to create secondary colors. The children used a paper circle with two colors on it hanging by a string. When the strin is pulled, the circle spins and ”mixes” the two colors to make another. We have posted pictures of this on our bulliten board upstairs ourside the math and construction room.

Dear Peacocks parents,

Information from us:

We have found one case of lice in the Peacocks group this week. We performed a very thorough check on every child in the group on the same day as it was found. We found no other cases of lice. Please check you children once again to avoid the spreading of lice again.

Our learning

Circle time: This week we continued our learning about Sweden. The children are becoming farmiliar with who the king of Sweden is, his royal guards, where stockholm is located in Sweden, if Sweden is close to the equator or not, where the castle is, the weather in Sweden ect. We also took some of our circle time this week to discuss how we should treat not only our friends but, everyone we encounter.

Outings: This week, we took a trip to the forest. We went there on our way to the park. While we were in the forest, we discussed the season of Autum. The children were posed with the question, ”What do you see in the forest that tells you it is Autum?” The children came up with a few things that signified Autum. They have learned well how to identify the seasons!

Science: This week, the children did an activity where they identified the anatomy of a snake using flash cards. The children also started to learn the function of certain parts of the snake.

Art: In preparation for Halloween, the children have been coloring different Halloween pictures such as witches, jack-o-lanterns, cats, ect. The children have also begun making big spiders out of foam balls and wire pipe cleaners. We will continue with Halloween art next week as well as we have a real pumpkin to carve!

All of the children are showing great progress!

Clothing: As of today, the weather has gotten even colder! Please send your children to school prepared for winter weather. In addition to rain clothes, please send something heavier for the children to wear underneath. Also, since there are some puddles left on the ground, please send your child to school with waterproof shoes or rain boots and extra socks.

Gym time: This week in the gym we split the gym into 2 sections and played two different games. One game was simple tag. The only rules were that the chhildren had to avoid goint through an obstacle and, there could only be one person who is tagged out at a time. So, if one child was tagged, that hcild had to sit out until another child was tagged. On the other side of the gym, we set up a game where the children attemted to throw balls and knock down newspaper hanging from a string. The children had alot of fun with both games!

10-11 Peacocks Newsletter.

Dear Peacocks parents,

Information from us:

Please remeber that we will have our picture day next week on Wednesday the 16th. Please dress your children very nicely on this day.

Our learning

Circle time: This week we started our study of Sweden. Since this is the same week as our trip to Junibaken, we placed the focus of our study mostly on Astrid Lindgren and Pippi Longstrump. Also in our circle time we have began to count backwards from 10 to 1 with a certain song.

Outings: This week we went to Junibaken and it was a great success! The children gathered at the school in the morning and we walked as a group to the Roslag-Nasby trafikplats where we took the bus to town. The children are becoming very comfortable with traveling of the bus. They are all starting to understand the way they must carry themselvs on the bus amongst other people. The travel went very smoothly.

When we arrived at Junibaken, the children had a great time playing while they waited for the train to come and take them through the stories. After getting off of the train, we sat and watched the ”Pettsson och Findus”theatre performance that Junibaken puts on for the children. When the Show was finished we sat in the Junibaken lunchroom and ate our lunch. This was the end our of day so we packed up and headed back to the school. We would like to thank all of the parents who came along with us as well as some of the other FuturaSkolan teachers for their help in the morning and tips about Junibaken. We greatly appreciate your help!

Science: This week we also had our Science day! We decided to do a very fun project with the children. We created non-newtonian fluid and briefly discussed ”viscosity”. Non-newtonian fluid is a liquid that has high viscosity and acts like a solid when pressure or agitation is applied as opposed to water which has very low viscosity. The children could actually pick up this liquid and roll it into a ball. As long they continued to roll the liquid, it held the form of a ball. If they stopped rolling the liquid, it would return to its liquid form and fall through their fingers like water.

Art: This week, the children colored in pictures Pippi Longstrump in preparation for our Junibaken trip.

Math: We have continued to use the ipad to do math games but we are placing more focus now on writing the numbers now that the children have begun to better understand the concept of mathmatics. Some of the children need to learn to recognize numbers and their numeric value. Up until now, there were still some children who recognized a quantity of objects but had a bit of trouble identifying a certain number itself. We will continue with learning to identify and write numbers.

Clothing: Most of the children are coming to school dressed for cold weather but still some children may not have hats or gloves. Please be sure to bring those things for your child. Also, a rain jacket is not enough to keep a child warm. Every child should have a heavier jacket to wear underneath their rain jacket.

4-10 Newsletter

Dear Peacocks parents,

Information from us:

We would like to welcome Hjalmar to the Peacocks class!  We hope he will find our group to be fun and challenging!  This week we’ve continued to build with the children’s math and English skill.

Our learning

Circle time: This week in circle time we began with studying New York. The children learned about the Statue of Liberty and some history behind it. We also talked a bit about the Empire State building. Most of the children in the Peacocks are familiar with the ”NY” logo that they have seen on baseball caps and shirts but now they know the logo belongs to the New York Yankees baseball team. We also took time to show the children the Flag of New York, The subway trains, and to talk about the population of New York city.

Art: This week, the children colored in pictures of the Statue of Liberty in observance of our New York learning. Towards the end of the week we spoke a little about the olympics and colored some pictures of athletes participating in Olympic events such as basketball, hockey, the Equestrian events. We also have a plan to make an ”Olympic torch.” Hopefully this is something we can accomplish on the way to our Olympics day.

Math: This week the children have begun to use the colored abacus to figure out math problems. This is moving along slowly but surely!

Clothing: Most of the children are coming to school dressed for cold weather but still some children may not have hats or gloves. Please be sure to bring those things for your child. Also, a rain jacket is not enough to keep a child warm. Every child should have a heavier jacket to wear underneath their rain jacket.

Outings: The children took part in our 2nd FuturaSkolan Olympics!  After all of the children had arrived at the school, we started our journey to Östermalms IP.  We walked to Roslag-Nasby Trafikplats where we took the bus to town.  When we arrived at Stadion we got off of the bus and walked the rest of the way.  All of the children traveled very well!  Finally we Arrived at Östermalms IP where we sat and had our morning snack and afterwards began our Olympic games!  The children had a great time being outside and playing the games.  Some pictures are attached.
